11- What makes someone a hero?

Being a hero doesn't mean wearing a suit that looks like Superman's and Batman's suits, having some special powers, or using a special name that most fictional heroes have to hid their identity. Being a  hero has its own meaning and purpose, and that came from our own hearts, and its called "Patriotism." A word which means the love for one's own country.

Philippines is well-known to have people who are very patriotic, and those people already had offered their lives to save our country from being conquered by other foreign oppressors: Japaneses, Spaniards, and Americans. Although many generations had passed from the time they had lived, we (modern Filipinos) are still admiring the deeds that they had done not only for our country but also for us, and most of us, I think, are trying to imitate those deeds by keeping others from harm. So, here are some famous Filipino heroes who did their best to protect our beloved country:

Lapu-Lapu the first known Filipino hero from Mactan in Visayas who fought and killed the Portuguese explorer and Spaniard leader, Ferdinand Magellan, the first person who tried  to manipulate our ancestors by Religion (Christianity)  in mid 15th century.

While back in 18th century, there was a Filipino hero who defend our Filipino rights and drive the Spaniards away from the Philippines by only his literary works (e.g. Noli Me Tangere, El filibusterismo, etc.). The person that I was trying to mention was named José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (but most of us prefer to call him Jose P. Rizal), I find it very unusual and
amazing because he's the only person I know who fought those strong foreign oppressors by only writing. As what I had just stated earlier, Filipino heroes did not had a very happy ending, Jose Rizal was killed for his braveness on criticizing the Spaniard government by its faultiness. After Jose Rizal had been killed, here came the "Himagsikan," that was lead by a Filipino hero, Andres Bonifacio, along with he's people who were also trying to obtain the peace that belongs to us Filipinos. I certainly believed that no wars ended happily, but it all ended miserably because many people would have died if it happened again. In our country's case, even though that bloody revolution ended with a lot of dead people (Spaniards and Filipinos), our country once again obtained that thing called Peace. And we are very proud to our brave heroes.

So let us back on the first paragraph of this blog post that says: Being a hero doesn't mean wearing a costume that Superman and Batman does, when they're rescuing someone. The truth is, being a hero came from one's heart, and that is love for one's country.

  1. You are correct Joshua! Being hero is hard, but it is not impossible. Yes, it is better if we do things that make us hero secretly because in these way we will feel so much sincere and grateful rather than letting others know you are kind or brave.
